Editorial Standards
This page documents how Men's Luxe Guide produces, verifies, and corrects its reviews. It is the operating contract behind the rankings.
Evaluation methodology
Every published review applies a documented evaluation methodology, defined before products are scored. The methodology names the criteria for the category, the weight given to each kind of evidence, and the scoring approach. It is published alongside every review. The general framework, including what counts as substantiation, lives at /methodology.
Evidence verification
Each product is evaluated against the published criteria using the strongest evidence available. The evidence we accept, in order of weight:
- Third-party reports against named standards. A gemological report tied to a recognized grading scale, a movement specification from the named caliber maker, a water-resistance rating stated to ISO 22810, a leather tannery disclosure. Documents must reference a standard, not a slogan.
- Manufacturer specifications, treated as supporting evidence. Spec sheets, material declarations, and warranty terms are recorded as claims and corroborated where possible against the third-party sources above. Standing alone, they are treated with caution.
- Supplier and component disclosures. When a brand names its movement supplier, its tannery, or its stone source, and that supplier confirms the relationship, the chain is verified.
- First-hand inspection. Where the team can handle the product, observations on build, finish, weight, and hardware are recorded directly and noted as first-hand.
When a claim rests on evidence we cannot verify, such as an unnamed lab, a grading scale that does not exist, or a supplier that declines to confirm, the review records the claim as unsubstantiated and the verdict reflects that.
Editorial independence
The editorial team operates under three governance rules:
- No advance brand review. Brands do not see drafts or scoring before publication. After publication, they cannot request changes to a verdict except through the corrections process below.
- No paid placements. A brand cannot pay to be ranked higher, ranked at all, excluded, or described in a particular way. This is not negotiable.
- Editorial separation from commercial relationships. Brands featured in a review may run affiliate programs the publication participates in. Commission rates vary widely. The ranking applies the methodology to the evidence. The commission rate is not an input.
Conflict-of-interest policy
Reviewers do not hold financial positions in the companies they cover. Reviewers do not accept brand-provided products in lieu of compensation. The publication does not accept payment for editorial coverage of any kind: sponsored articles, brand storytelling, white-label reviews, paid newsletter slots, paid social, or paid event partnerships. Affiliate commission on reader purchases does not influence rankings. Where the publication has a material connection to a brand it covers, such as common ownership, that connection is disclosed at /disclosures.
Corrections and revisions
Factual errors are corrected once verified. Readers can submit corrections to [email protected] with the affected URL, the disputed claim, and supporting evidence. The team reviews each submission against the original sources and the new evidence.
A corrected review carries a correction notice that records what changed, when, and the source of the correction. The publication does not silently edit a published review to alter its substance after the fact. When a correction changes a ranking, the review is republished with the date of revision noted.
What we do not do
Men's Luxe Guide is editorial. It is not a consumer-protection authority, a laboratory, or a substitute for professional advice on health, safety, or finance. The publication does not make medical claims, does not run its own gemological or horological lab, and does not represent that a verdict is exhaustive or that the absence of a product from a review means the product is unsuitable. The reviews say what they say, with the evidence in plain view.
